Game of Thrones: God’s Pursuit Call Us to Remember His Faithfulness | Joshua 2

LS Community Church live Sunday gathering, December 1st; teaching by Stan Rodda.

Judges 21:25; Joshua 2:1, 9-11, 4:5-7, 11:23, 24:14, 15; Matthew 1:5-6

In the hit show, “Game of Thrones,” we are introduced to an entirely different world where nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros:  Baratheon, Bolton, Lannister, Stark, Targaryen

It’s a time of darkness and death. Evil seems to be the only thing that reigns in Westeros. As each different house clamors, positions, murders and alliance their way to be in a position to take the Iron Throne and unite Westeros under their rule.

In many ways it is a reminder of what it must have been like for Israel. As we enter Act 2 of The Story, this part of Israel’s history is all aboutwho is ultimately in charge?

Israel is going to fluctuate between a theocracy–God leading the people through a judge. And a monarchy–the people looking to an earthly king for leadership. And during this season of Israel’s history, the end of the book of judges gives us some dark insight into how things are going for them. In those days there was no king in Israel; all the people did what was right in their own eyes. [Judges 21:25 NRSV]

This is how it goes in Game of Thrones. There isn’t one true king over Westeros. So everyone fights to have their way and for the next seven weeks, we see similar things in Israel. A dark and chaotic time in some ways–oppression, war, death, judges & kings.

Who is ultimately in charge? And how is this young nation of Israelsupposed to survive in the world?

The first leader after Moses is a man named Joshua. Just before Moses’ death God had called Moses to set Joshua apart as the next leader. Joshua is the one who will take them into the Promised Land. And throughout his time as leader of Israel, He is going to remind the people of one thing

God’s Pursuit Calls Us to Remember His Faithfulness. Because when times are dark, When you’re trying to figure out who’s in control, when life isn’t going how you thought it would, when everyone is doing whatever they want, we should remember God’s faithfulness.
